 In the Footsteps of Caravaggio

If you follow this blog, you know that the art of Caravaggio is one my greatest passions. I proudly call myself a "Caravaggio-chaser," as it is my goal to see every work of art he has ever painted (or at least, those that are known to be in existence). I have traveled to Malta, Siracusa, Messina, Naples, Cremona, Milan, and France, just to see works by this genius of chiaroscuro, and I have read numerous books on his fascinating life and art. It was in Rome that Caravaggio spent the bulk of his productive years, and more of his works are here than in any other city. Rome is also the only place in the world where you can see six (6!) of his paintings in various churches, absolutely free!

On this tour, not only do I take you to all three of these churches, where you will learn about Caravaggio's revolutionary techniques and unprecedented style (which often got his work rejected by the religious men who had commissioned it), but we will also follow this tortured artist's footsteps around this city, from the art shop where his earliest unsigned works were sold, to the street where his muse and lover Lena Agnoletti lived, to his own studio where he was evicted for (among other things) making a hole in the ceiling, to the alley where the deadly tennis match took place, which turned him into a fugitive on the run. No other artist led such a mysterious and fascinating life, and for many (including myself), no other artist created such honest and moving paintings.
